“What’s my line?”
This project is centred around the idea of performativity and the active role that a viewer can play in generating meaning by participating in the process of perception. The video takes place in the kitchen of a company, where the boss of the company, an intern and the cleaner interact during lunchtime break. Filmed from different angles of an event in the same interior space, it is based on the act of repetition typically used in the acting exercise called the Meisner technique in order to build up a character based on the role given to them and where s/he is positioned in society. The act of repetition could suggest the labor and workload we tackle daily in this globalized world.
The compositional placement of video screens in the gallery space is aimed to create connections among architecture, performance and the viewer. In this multi-channel video, the viewer encounters certain events from different angles that generate diverse effects on the way s/he perceives those events. Consequently, the audience undergoes an individualized experience. These multiple perspectives could create a variety of narratives and ideas which blur the line between mere beholder and active participant.
Pegah Keshmirshekan and Sugano Matsusaki are currently working and living in Berlin, Germany. In their personal artistic practice the key question they deal with is how collective and individual identities intertwine with topics such as language, migration and labor. Working with improvisational acting technique, in this collaborative project, they experiment with the ways in which the film industry has impacted our social life and vice versa. In this project they are inspired by the act of repetition typically used in acting exercise (Meisner technique) in order to build up a character.
